A popular pitstop among road cyclists, Ashland is ideally situated for exploring cycling routes in and around the Richmond area. And with parks, playgrounds, and miles of wooded walking trails all within Town limits, there is much to explore outdoors.
The Ashland Trolley Line Trail is a half-mile linear trail that is part of the historic Ashland-Richmond Trolley Line. The trail extends from 11644 Gwathmey Church Road at the southern end to the intersection of Maple Street and Ashcake Road. Improvements to the Walder Lane section are scheduled for 2019.
Carter Park is located between South Center Street and Maple Street and consists of about 13.5 acres, most of which is heavily wooded. Carter Park is the centerpiece of the Ashland park system. It contains Carter Park Pool, one-half basketball court, a picnic shelter and picnic area, playground, and gravel trails in the woods.
Eight acres in size, DeJarnette Park (400 Race is located on Stony Run and is bordered by residential uses on both sides. Primary access to the park is at the end of Race Course Street. There is an alternate entrance but no parking at the end of Beverly Road. A one-acre pond underwent rehabilitation in 2006. Otherwise, the site remains largely in a natural state.

This one acre park is located at the northern end of North Center Street. The park connects to Vaughan Road by a 1/3 mile path along the rail tracks. The site remains largely open space with one picnic table and three benches that allow for watching trains pass by.

The Stony Run Trail trailhead is located at the intersection of Ashcake Road and South Center Street. Residents and visitors can bike, walk, hike, or run on the Stony Run Trail. The trail exits to the west at the southern end of South James Street, approximately one block from DeJarnette Park and three blocks from Henry Clay Elementary School.
