Liberty & Slavery: The Paradox of America's Founding Fathers
Monday, Feb. 23, 6:30 - 8:00pm
Ages 13 -Adults. America's Founding Fathers envisioned an America founded on individual liberty and independence. This desire for freedom was expressed by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence, which stated, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal . . . ." Yet many of the Founding Fathers, including George Washington, James Madison, and Patrick Henry, as well as Thomas Jefferson, were slave owners. In the award-winning film Liberty & Slavery: The Paradox of America's Founding Fathers, historians and scholars paint a picture of the 18th century culture of the Founding Fathers, and explores how these men who championed liberty did not champion it for all.

The Buzz about Native Bees
Saturday, Feb. 28, 11:00am - noon
Ages 13 – Adults. When most people think of bees, they think of the honeybee. But there are around 3,600 species of native bees in the US--over 400 in Virginia--and they are excellent pollinators! These bees were living here thousands of years before the honeybee was imported by European colonists, and they are perfectly matched to native flowering plants and trees. Sadly, they are facing many threats. Join Xerces Ambassador and Master Naturalist Rosalind Reilly to learn about these forgotten pollinators and why the best way to “save the bees” is not to get a hive, but to make simple changes in our lawn and garden routines that will help native bees survive and thrive.
